Official 2020 Chinese New Year Festival Launch - 14 January

Media LaunchThis event kicks off the 2020 Great Barrier Reef Chinese New Year Festival. Local media, festival partners and sponsors are invited to join CADCAI in welcoming the Year of the Metal Rat. Get a sneak preview of what activities are in store over the festival period. Meet,  greet and video the aupicious CADCAI lions in action.

New Year's Eve Celebrations- Cairns Lagoon Plaza- Friday 24 January

It’s time to celebrate !  Join CADCAI as it welcomes the new year with traditonal lion and dragon  performances and noisy fire crackers to keep the evil spirits away. Feed the lions with hongbao (lucky red packets) and to be blessed with good fortune, happiness and prosperity for the coming year.

Two Worlds Chinese History Exhibition - 24 Jan to 26 March

Cairns Museum and CADCAI proudly present:

Two Worlds: Chinese Australians in Cairns from WW 2 to the 1960s 

This exhibition features photographs, objects and stories from Chinese Australians about growing up in post-World War II Cairns.

Exhibition is on at Cairns Museum  –  24 January to 26 March

Cairns Central Chinese New Year Celebrations - 24 Jan - 3 February

Come to Cairns Central to take part in our Chinese New Year festivities. Our Chinese Pioneers of Cairns exhibition will showcase local Chinese artefacts, the history and contribution made by the early Chinese in Cairns and region, plus miniature replicas of historic Chinatown created by local historian, Colin Walter. With a Lion Dancing performance, and special offers running throughout the festival period, Cairns Central is the place to come to bring in the Year of the Rat!

Connecting Ancient Cultures - CADCAI Lion and Minjil Indigenous Dance Performances 24 Jan -1 February

Not to be missed – a first ever live collaborative performance  by CADCAI lion and our local Minjil Indigenous dancers. A cross cultural arts project funded by RADF.

Have your photgraph taken in a Chinese lion cut-out created by local artist hayley Gillespie, dress up in Chinese costumes or pose with real CADCAI performance lions.

Lantern Making Worksho  (Thursday 6 February) 

Decorate your own Chinese New Year lantern in this fun-filled  workshop. Bring your lantern to the Chinese Frindship gardens on Friday 7 Febraury , place a candle inside and set it afloat in the Centenary Lakes. Fesyivites start at 5,30 pm.

Cairns Airport 2020 Chinese New Year Street Festival - Saturday 1 February

Cairns Historical Chinatown – Grafton Street comes alive with family friendly entertainment,  music, dance,  yummy food and market stalls as the Cairns community celebrates the 2020 Year of the Rat. Dont miss the opportunity to have your photograph taken with CADCAI’s colourful dragon, lions and performers.

Experience an Chinese authentic Chinese yum cha and  enjoy a variety of delightful Cantonese dim sims in the company of family and friends. There will be two sessions.

Lantern Festival - Friday 7 February

The Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuan Xiao marks the end of Chinese New Year festivities. Traditionally Chinese families make sweet glutinous rice balls called “tang yuan” which symbolise reunion and light bright lanterns decorated  with blessing or riddles.

Our Cairns family Lantern Festival is held at the Chinese friendship Gardens. Decorate your candle-lit lantern with blessings  and float them on  the lake.  Enjoy the CADCAI dragon and lion dancers as they make make their final festival appearances.  Lanterns, food and refreshments will be available for purchase.

2020 Year of the Rat Gala Banquet - Saturday 8 February

Every year CADCAI members celebrate the New Year with a traditional Chinese banquet. The menu includes mouth watering dishes such as whole steamed coral trout , shitake mushrooms with tender duck, chilli king prawns and sweet and sour pork loin with hawthorn fruit.  Full menu and booking detail
