GREAT BARRIER REEF CHINESE NEW YEAR 2020
On Saturday 25th January, 2020, Chinese all over the world will celebrate the start of a new 12 year zodiac cycle by welcoming in the first animal of the Chinese zodiac, the white metal RAT.
Chinese New Year is a time of great joy, excitement and goodwill. In Cairns, these celebrations are brought together by CADCAI as the Great Barrier Reef Chinese New Year Festival.
The Festival is celebrated over 15 days and is an opportunity for the Cairns region to share and celebrate its rich Chinese history and culture and the contributions of Chinese migrants and their descendants.
Throughout the two-week celebration, the city comes alive with feasts, fiery dragons, dancing and music. Highlights include the spectacular Chinese New Year’s Eve lion and dragon performances at Cairns Lagoon Plaza on Friday, 25th January and the iconic Cairns Airport Year of the Rat Street Festival in Grafton Street on Saturday 1st February .
The festivities conclude with the Lantern Festival, which is held at the end of the 15 day celebration on Friday, 7 February, 2020.
The Festival is proudly supported by the Queensland Government, Cairns Regional Council and a number of local Cairns businesses and media groups.
Please join us to celebrate the Cairns Great Barrier Reef Chinese New Year Festival 2020.
